Australia House of Representatives approves same-sex marriage bill

Same Sex Marriage Has Passed The Final Vote

"A time to build, a time to love, and is now at last a time for marriage equality", he said.

Another Queensland MP who voted against the Bill, the Independent Bob Katter, said during the debate that "we have an extraordinary incidence of homosexual behaviour in Australia compared with other nations, and I think the people who have been speaking for this Bill would agree with me on that".

Many supporters of the Bill travelled to Canberra to witness the outcome of the parliamentary process.

"It would be absurd if we end up with the Senate approving marriage equality in one form, the House of Representatives approving marriage equality in a different form, and we will still not get the change through", he said.

The House vote took place on the last sitting day of parliament for the year, with more than 100 MPs speaking on the bill this week.

"This is a day for every Australian".

Members of the LGBT community fought for the equality of marriage in Australia for decades.

Its passage was further delayed through numerous attempts by conservatives to add amendments for religious protections from the law, but they all failed and the Bill passed unamended. This means couples who don't want to be referred as "husband and wife" may be able to take their partner as they lawful wedded spouse.

Forster was joined in the public gallery by her partner, Virginia Edwards.

"A promise was made by the leaders of this parliament and this promise has not been adequately delivered on", Mr Abbott said.

There have been two new announcements concerning gay marriage in just the past two or three days.

Prime Minister Turnbull campaigned in 2015 on the promise of having a revisitation of Australia's marriage laws.

The House of Representatives passed the bill to change the definition of marriage from exclusively between a man and a man to "a union of two people".

Under political pressure to find a solution, the ruling Liberal National Coalition government announced the non-compulsory survey in August, saying if the result was "yes" they would allow a free vote in Parliament.

Fewer than five of 150 MPs voted against the law same-sex marriage. More than 12 million people participated.

Australians have always been in favor of same-sex marriage, with polling from as long as 10 years ago showing majority support for legalizing marriage equality.
