Mueller's Russian Federation probe has cost millions - DOJ

The money was spent between mid-May, when the investigation began, and September 30 of this year.

In addition, the Justice Department has spent $3.5 million to support the investigation, though the special counsel's office says that money would have been spent anyway if Mueller had not been appointed.

The news could also elicit a strong reaction from the president, who has previously said that any attempt to investigate his personal business dealings would go beyond Mueller's investigative mandate and would represent a "violation".

The special counsel's budget itself has not been made public.

The budget overview notes that its funding comes from a "permanent, indefinite" appropriation for independent counsels to do their work, meaning if can not be touched by Congress. Travel outlays added up to $223,645, most of which was spent to temporarily relocate DOJ employees detailed to the SCO.

The first four and a half months of the probe comes with a price tag of more than $6.7 million, according to Fox News. Those people include Mueller himself, Jeannie Rhee, James Quarles and Aaron Zebley, who left the law firm Wilmer Hale with Mueller in May, and Greg Andres, the prosecutor who left the law firm Davis Polk in August and is co-leading the case against former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates.

Mueller's investigators have, according to previous media reports, examined Russian purchases of Trump-owned apartments, the president's involvement with Russian associates in SoHo, and the president's 2008 sale of his Florida mansion to a Russian oligarch, Dmitry Rybolovlev.

Mr Mueller is looking into claims of Russian interference in the USA presidential election and potential collusion by Mr Trump's team - an allegation denied by the President and Russian authorities. The president's financial records could potentially show whether Trump owes or has received money from suspects connected to Russian Federation. He has announced criminal charges against four people so far, including Trump's former national security advisor, Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have official confirmation that the Trump finances subpoena was never sent, and we even know why.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California praised the work done by Mueller and his team in a statement Tuesday.
