Nine dead, 37 injured in Taliban attack on Peshawar agriculture college

As per reports from Khyber Teaching Hospital, three bodies and 17 wounded were brought to the medical facility.

Police said at least three militants opened fire at security guards near the gates of the Agriculture Training Institute, injuring one person before making their way inside and targeting student accommodation. Two soldiers also sustained injuries who were moved to Combined Military Hospital for treatment. The clearance operation was launched afterwards.

The area where the incident occurred is a hub for educational institutions in the city including the University of Peshawar.

The Tehreek- i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack.

As per reports, the attackers who were at least three in number entered the directorate with masked faces after arriving at the site in a rickshaw. The institute was closed for the Eid-e-Milad holiday, but about 70 students were present in the hostel. The eyewitness, a student, said he and his colleagues ran as fast as they could but two of them were injured in the firing. The university hostel usually houses almost 400 students, but most had gone home for a long holiday weekend and only about 120 students remained.

A gunbattle continued between forces and the attackers for over an hour and the Pakistan Army successfully killed all the terrorists.

In 2014, Pakistani Taliban gunmen murdered more than 140 children in Peshawar, according to the BBC, making it one of the deadliest attack in the country's history.

The group seeks the creation of a state ruled by ultraconservative Islamic law, and is loosely tied to the Afghan Taliban, which is waging an insurgency against authorities in Kabul.

Peshawar has been the scene of some of the worst violence during the years of an insurgency by the Pakistani Taliban.
