Duke grad students protest proposed GOP tax plan

Graduate students marched from Bruin Plaza to Murphy Hall on Wednesday in protest of the House GOP tax bill

Under the House Republican Tax Reform bill, graduate students who receive tuition waivers would have to pay income taxes because the waivers would be counted as income.

All of Pennsylvania's Republican members in the U.S. House voted in favor of the tax plan, while all of the Democrats from the state voted against it.

Both the House and Senate versions of the bill would tax on college and university endowments. As the average student stipend is $16,000 annually, this will make graduate research work untenable for many. The net impact of taxing graduate school will be to raise its cost, leading to a net reduction in people getting advanced degrees.

I know this is especially hard because graduate students have asked the same from us and, as much as we try, we often find ourselves reacting to issues as they come up. The Senate's version of the bill - which does not now include the provision reclassifying tuition waivers - was approved Tuesday by the Senate Budget Committee, which is chaired by Sen.

Those protesting on the Pentacrest were rife with emotion on Wednesday, with legislation that would increase the cost of education for graduate students potentially up for a vote in the Senate later this week.

As a graduate student, Negaard said she doesn't make much money so "taking more out of our paycheck just doesn't make any sense".

Graduate students in attendance said it is already a challenge to make ends meet in the Bay Area.

Francis said he didn't have data on how many private college employees use tuition waivers in any given year.

"We team with other universities and other associations to make sure that the message isn't simply about the University of Wyoming - although we are focused on that", he said.

A crowd largely composed of graduate students gathered on campus today in a rally addressing their collective concerns with the proposed changes.

The event started at 1 p.m. and opted for a less traditional walkout, encouraging students, faculty and members of the community to take part in the protest without having to leave their classes to show support. According to data from the U.S. Department of Education, of the 145,000 graduate students nationwide who would shoulder a higher tax burden, about 60 percent are studying within STEM fields. "I am really not about that". "As a research assistant, there's a small monthly stipend, and tuition is paid for under an educational allotment". The provision has been called a "ghost tax", because it would tax up to tens of thousands of dollars the students never receive as income. "So, an undergraduate [student] to get out of the University of Southern California with loans will now be paying tax on the interest". Educators plan to protest the GOP plan because it removes the tax deduction for teachers who buy school supplies for their classrooms. Several said they feared tax increases would cause a brain drain of American researchers fleeing to Europe.

Further, many campus workers would also experience tax hikes over the next decade. The movement has also partnered with Save Grad Ed, a consortium of students from six universities who will be forced to withdrawal from their universities as a result of the bill, according to their site. It would effectively allow the government to take a cut of money meant to support education and research and redirecting "these dollars for what the government thinks they should be used for", he said. His research group focuses on biodegradable metals for medical devices that could save lives, like cardiovascular stents that open up blocked arteries and safely absorb into the body once their work is done. It's a precarious lifestyle that I think most graduate students live, and nobody is arguing that we should change that. "That's why we are working closely with other universities, national organizations and members of Congress to refocus the tax reform debate on simplification and incentives for education and research".

In social sciences, graduate students also get to be teaching assistants for large lectures.
