Football star Robinho bags 9 years in Jail for Sexual Assault

Former Manchester City star Robinho sentenced to nine years in prison

Robinho sentenced to nine years in prison for sexual assault","description":"Robinho was found guilty of assaulting a 22-year-old woman at a nightclub in Milan in 2013, when he played for AC Milan.

"We would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the accusations, affirming that he did not participate in the episode", said a statement posted on Robinho's Instagram feed.

He has a right to two appeals and Italy would only launch extradition proceedings once this legal process is exhausted, a legal source said.

Robinho, whose full name is Robson de Souza, is now in his native Brazil, where he plays for Atletico Mineiro, which are based in Belo Horizonte.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that five other men were also accused of violently sexually assaulting an Albanian woman and that another member of the group, Ricardo Falco, was also sentenced to nine years in jail.

According to local legislation no Brazilian citizen can be extradited to another country under request to face criminal charges, although that will not apply should he leave his home nation and is detained elsewhere.

He's been with Atletico Mineiro since February of a year ago.

"All legal steps are already being taken in response to this decision".

Robinho, 33, started his career with Santos, and as a teenager helped the Peixe to their first Serie A title for 20 years.

Robinho played more than 40 games for Manchester City between 2008 and 2010, scoring 14 domestic goals for the club, after signing from Real Madrid.
