Ex-Packer Martellus Bennett heads back to New England Patriots

Packers TE Martellus Bennett ruled out Sunday against Bears

Signed to a three-year, $21 million contract in the offseason, the 6-foot-6, 275-pound Bennett failed to find the end zone with Green Bay, but he appeared in all 16 games with New England last season, hauling in 55 catches and scoring a career-high seven touchdowns.

During the Packers' bye week, Bennett posted on Instagram that he was "pretty sure" he would retire at the end of the season. He did not play in the 30-17 loss on Monday to the Detroit Lions.

"After conversations with my family I'm pretty sure these next eight games will be the conclusion of my National Football League career", Bennett posted. He practiced with the Patriots on Friday. So they tried to f-- me before they thought I would f-- them. A powerful line-of-scrimmage blocker with five consecutive seasons of 50-plus receptions, Bennett provided fresh options to a potent offense. He was claimed by the Patriots the next day. It got worse during the season, specifically against the cowboys so I asked to have it checked and we checked it. He did that and he went to a number of them.

"I mean, really, to tie all that together, you're asking me to get inside somebody else's feelings, conversation, more on a personal level", McCarthy said (via ESPN's Rob Demovsky). After that, then you have the termination and then the claim. "I think this all started obviously coming out of the bye week". That's not for me to comment on. "If someone is not on that boat, it's better that they're not here", Richard Rodgers said. "We know our ultimate goal".

Rodgers caught 58 passes in 2015 before ceding time last season to then-starter Jared Cook.
