Former President Barack Obama - and by extension, his Secret Service detail - reported for jury duty in Cook County, Illinois, at the Daley Center in Chicago on Wednesday morning.

Despite the hype County Chief Judge Tim Evans said the former president been dismissed.

As happens most days, would-be jurors brought books, but on Wednesday some people brought books Obama had authored in hopes he might sign them.

Obama owns a home in the Kenwood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.

Obama watched the entire 20-minute educational video during his time at the Daley Center, Evans said.

Obama was seen shaking hands once he arrived in the building. But Obama was ready to serve if told to do so, Evans said.

A jury duty summons is usually sent in the post and requires the recipient to report on the designated day or face consequences such as a fine. When he arrived there was a feeding frenzy as crowds of people inside the courthouse took photos and videos of the former president.

Bush reported for jury duty in Dallas, Texas in 2015.

Obama, who now resides in Washington, D.C., has been active in various endeavors for his new Obama Foundation, and has also teamed with the other living former presidents in raising money for hurricane victims in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

Bill Clinton also appeared as a prospective juror in a federal court in Manhattan, New York City in 2003, though he was not selected either to sit on a jury.

Nor is Obama the first famous Chicago resident to be called to jury duty.
