AJ Styles Makes WWE History On Smackdown

AJ Styles wins WWE title in Manchester - Will he face Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series?

The changes in the match card affect the major heels of Smackdown Live.

At last night's SmackDown, AJ Styles was able to defeat Jinder Mahal to win the WWE Championship. On his Instagram, Jinder Mahal addressed not only AJ Styles, but shut down any rumors of him being injured or violating the WWE Wellness Policy.

After spending almost his entire WWE career as an enhancement talent, Mahal became one of the unlikeliest WWE champions in history when he beat Randy Orton for the title at Backlash in May. This was billed as a champion vs. champion match. However, now that AJ Styles not only replaced Mahal as WWE Champion but as Lesnar's Survivor Series opponent, WWE doesn't need Cena to bolster the match. Shorn of the belt, Mahal will no longer compete against WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at the event, with the new incumbent taking his place.

While this is the first time the WWE Championship has changed hands outside of North America, the company's top title has been switched on another continent before, albeit under a different name.

Inoki vacated the championship a week later and Backlund regained it.

Mahal has the worst win-loss record out of any WWE Champion in history and went from jobber straight to world champion. Instead, they view Backlund's two reigns as one interrupted run as champion. Survivor Series airs on the WWE Network on Sunday, November 19.
