The Koenigsegg Agera RS hit 284 miles per hour

The Koenigsegg Agera RS Is Now the Fastest Production Car Ever Made

Before the Agera RS took to that street, Bugatti held the production vehicle world record for top speed. The average of 277.9mph secured the record.

Factory driver Niklas Lilja was the man behind the wheel.

The owner of the Agera had used his connection in the film industry to convince Nevada authorities to shut down an 11-mile stretch of Highway 106, which runs between Las Vegas and the town of Pahrump, Top Gear reports. At the time, it narrowly took the record from the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which had recorded a 269.86mph time. Since this was a world record attempt, the speed was verified by a third-party company called Racelogic.

Equipped with a 5.0L V8 twin-turbo engine delivering 1,160 hp, the Agera RS (limited to 25 units built) could have driven even faster if it had been fitted with tires more specifically designed for extreme temperature and pressure conditions than the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires it drove on.

Another challenger is the recently revealed Venom F5 from America's Hennessey.

Hennessey failed to take the speed record, however, because the auto only completed one run and the title-holder is required to make two runs down the same stretch of tarmac in opposite directions. Earlier in October, Koenigsegg took another record from Bugatti, smashing the 0-400-0 km/h record. With Lilja behind the wheel, the Agera RS managed to go from 0 to 401.78 kph (249.65 mph) and back to 0 in just 33.87 seconds.

It's also said that the Agera RS's surge of torque did not drop off after 240 miles per hour.
