In Pursuit of a Universal Flu Vaccine

65-year-old Nebraskan dies from the flu, DHHS advises others to get vaccinated

Typically, it takes up to two weeks to get full protection from the flu shot.

Getting your annual flu shot could soon be a thing of the past. You can have some side effects after vaccination, but this is not flu illness. Other strategies include developing vaccines aimed at the virus's protein coat, other proteins that have been found to be identical in multiple flu strains, or the stalk of the hemagglutinin protein rather than its head.

Conventional vaccines have been shown to be less than 60 percent effective when they're successfully matched to the now circulating strain.

Current vaccines provide protection against only three or four strains of the flu and are not always correct in predicting what strains will be worst that year. One difference stood out - Ineffectiveness was not seen in flu vaccines manufactured without the use of chicken eggs in the process.

The goal is to combine the desired HA and NA antigens from the target strain (flu strain 1) with genes from a harmless strain that grows well in an egg (flu strain 2). The 2016-2017 vaccine was only 43 percent effective against the predominant influenza A H3N2 strain, and protection has been nearly as low in other years. I've read that the nasal spray version of the flu vaccine is equally effective. However, Dr. Vooght explains that the Australia flu situation was severe because it had a mismatch between the vaccine and the virus strain. "We can protect ourselves and also our family, friends and the community", said family nurse practitioner Sarah Fincham, assistant clinical professor at Washington State University's college of nursing in Spokane. Those that received higher doses of the vaccine didn't even get sick.

The current strain of H3N2 emerged during the 2014-15 flue season and remains prevalent today. Once it has been injected, these specific viruses trigger the body's immune system to go against proteins which move away from the surface of the flu virus. "Our data suggest that we should invest in new technologies to significantly increase the production of influenza vaccines that do not depend on eggs", he argued.

The vaccines effectiveness in mice is an encouraging sign, but a lot more testing needs to be done before it could become commercially available.
