Nadal 'Never Dreamed' Of Year-End Top Spot
RAFAEL NADAL will finish the year at the top of the tree after winning the second round of ATP Paris Masters against his South Korean opponent.
This is the fourth time the 31-year-old has ended the season as world No 1, having previously achieved the feat in 2008, 2010 and 2013.
"For me it has much more value (to) finish the year than being number one in the middle of the season".
Speaking after victory on Wednesday, the Spaniard said: "I'm very, very happy for everything".
The Spaniard has enjoyed a fabulous season, winning two Grand Slam titles along the way, and the French and US Open champion made no mistake in pipping his great rival Roger Federer to the prestigious year-end top spot.
"It is something that means lot to me". And very happy of course.
This has been a remarkable season for Nadal, who bounced back from wrist problems previous year to win his 15th and 16th grand slam titles at the French Open and US Open. It's been an fantastic year, ' he said after the match.
After conceding an early break, Nadal looked to have turned things around when he led 5-2 in the opening set only for Chung to level up.
It marks the conclusion of what has been a remarkable season of renaissance for Nadal, who overcame wrist problems from a year ago to win the French Open and US Open - his 15th and 16th grand slam titles. Without really shine, a protégé of Carlos Moya Toni Nadal was defeated in the trap, Chung-Hyeon in two sets (7-5, 6-3), after not evil suffered in the first set.
Nadal's results in Paris will give a good idea for how suited he now is to make a run at the biggest tournament he has never won in his career-the World Tour Finals in London in two weeks.
The Rome Masters and Montreal Masters champion fell to Dutchman Robin Haase in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 second-round defeat.
With no Federer here, the draw is relatively open for Nadal to make a real run at the title, which would bring him closer to a career sweep of Masters events (he also has never won Miami or Shanghai).
