With Sprint T-Mobile Merger Called Off, What's Next?
Sprint is now the US's fourth largest wireless carrier, while T-Mobile sits in third place, behind the mobile network duopoly that is Verizon and AT&T.
The Nikkei Asian Review kicked off by reporting from Japan that Sprint's owner, Japan's SoftBank, plans to break off deal negotiations with T-Mobile's parent company, Germany's Deutsche Telekom, over disagreements about who would control the combined company.
According to tentative terms of the deal that Reuters was first meant to report last month, Sprint Shareholders and SoftBank would have received near about 40% or bit extra with the joined company. SoftBank appeared to be receptive to an arrangement that would that would give Deutsche Telekom control as long as it retained some clout in the combined company. Sprint, T-Mobile and SoftBank representatives didn't immediately reply to requests for comment. Cable companies like; Charter Communications Inc and Comcast Corp are also stepping into the market with wireless service on airwaves of Verizon.
Sprint's stock slumped 9.3 percent Monday.
SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son previously withdraw an attempt to purchase T-Mobile back in 2014, amid United States regulator customer concerns. This time around, Softbank is supposedly passing off the proposed end-of-talks to Deutsche Telekom, but until either company makes an official announcement, then the merger talks will be hanging in limbo.
A deal between Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint and Bellevue, Washington-based T-Mobile would be certain to attract heavy scrutiny from regulators, since it would reduce the four largest carriers in the country to three.
Under former United States president Barack Obama's administration, officials fended off a previous attempt by SoftBank to merge Sprint with T-Mobile.
