Changes to airport security procedures

New Check-In Baggage Procedure Leads to Call to Arrive at Bradley Earlier

The TSA said in July it was imposing new security rules requiring US domestic airline travelers to remove all electronic items larger than mobile phones such as tablets, e-readers and video game consoles from carry-on baggage for screening. "These new measures will impact all flights from airports that serve as last points of departure locations to the United States". Yesterday was the deadline.

Following the American Department of Homeland Security directive to airlines flying to the US, Air India has also started asking passengers questions like the objective of their trips and about their check-in bags. Air India is the only Indian carrier that flies to the USA, both nonstop and one-stop via Europe.

Korean Airlines President and Chief Operating Officer Walter Cho said, "We are asking customers to show up at the airport early ..."

Passengers who do online check-in have to deposit their bags at dedicated counters at the airport, where they are subject to a short security interview. A sixth carrier, Royal Jordanian, said it would begin the new procedures in mid-January after U.S. authorities granted its request for a delay in implementing the measures.

"We therefore advise all passengers travelling to the USA to arrive at the airport three hours prior to departure to ensure they can proceed through all airport checkpoints in good time", Cathay Pacific said on a website posting.

In March, the U.S. banned passengers from taking large electrical devices such as laptops on board flights from eight mainly Muslim countries over security fears. Previously, laptops had been banned in the cabin on flights originating in eight counties in the Middle East and North Africa.

Each airline is handling the regulations differently, some requiring earlier arrivals at the airport, others not.

USA authorities in June also ordered increased security around aircraft and in passenger areas, and other places where travelers can be cleared by US officials before they depart and ordered enhanced screening of personal electronic devices.

"However, as and when there is a new directive from the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), we comply with the same and are in compliance for the latest one too", an AI spokesperson said.

AAPA director-general Andrew Herdman told reporters at an industry conference in Taipei yesterday: "Essentially, the USA requirements mean you have to provide pre-check-in screening of passengers and that may involve interviewing passengers, and that involves training a lot of front-line staff, either your own or an appointed agent, to carry out such activities. I don't think the costs have been estimated, but they have been significant", he said.
