NAACP Issues Travel Advisory Against American Airlines, Warns Black Travelers

The nation's oldest civil rights organization cautioned African American travelers of what they called "disrespectful, discriminatory or unsafe conditions".

"The growing list of incidents suggesting racial bias reflects an unacceptable corporate culture and involves behavior that can not be dismissed as normal or random", NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a statement.

Due to several "disturbing incidents" involving Black travelers on American Airlines flights, the NAACP has issued a "national travel advisory" warning to passengers of color.

They include an African American man forced off a flight after an incident with two white passengers and an African American woman who purchased two first-class tickets and was moved to coach while her white companion was allowed to stay in first class.

An American Airlines spokeswoman didn't comment directly about the allegations, but said the company was "disappointed" in the travel advisory and said its staff is "proud to serve customers of all backgrounds".

On Wednesday, the airline sent a message to employees signed by its chief executive, Doug Parker, emphasizing that the company's mission was in line with that of the N.A.A.C.P. and that it would not "tolerate discrimination of any kind".

"The NAACP said it has issued travel advisories in the past when "conditions on the ground pose a substantial risk of harm to black Americans, and we are concerned today that the examples cited herein may represent only the "tip of the iceberg" when it comes to American Airlines" documented mistreatment of African American customers".

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) distributed a travel advisory after what they call a "disturbing" trend of discrimination or unfair treatment.

The woman's travelling companion, who was white, remained assigned to a first-class seat, according to NAACP.

In citing the four recent incidents in which African American passengers reported discrimination by American, NAACP officials did not list flight numbers, dates, names of passengers, or cities involved in every case.

A pilot ordered an African-American woman removed from her flight from NY to Miami because she complained about having her seat changed. American Airlines appears to not have given a reason for the change to the passengers.

"It's been many years that we thought has passing but you know it still lingers", Willie Matthews, Jr, who lives in Virginia, said. Briana Williams, 24, said she was booted off an AA flight in August after she asked for her gate-checked stroller during an extended travel delay as passengers were leaving the plane.

Blankson told ABC News the travel advisory is indefinite and the organization could reconsider its status after conversations with the airline, which has responded by inviting NAACP leaders to its headquarters in Texas.
