AAA Offers Tips To Parents During National Teen Driver Safety Week

Remind your teen that driving under the influence of any substance- including illicit prescription or even over the counter drugs-could have deadly consequences and is strictly enforced.

Distracted driving, drowsy driving, speeding, alcohol use, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving with passengers are among the risky driving behaviors teens are more likely than older drivers to engage in behind the wheel.

"Cell phone use continues to be a serious and often deadly distraction for all drivers, but it's a significant problem among young, inexperienced drivers", said Rhonda Craft, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety.

AAA says parents should talk to their teen drivers about not drinking and driving, the importance of buckling up, keeping your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, following the speed limit and avoid driving while exhausted.

Passengers. Passengers in a teen's auto can lead to disastrous consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States.

It would also prohibit permit holders to drive between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless they're accompanied by a parents or guardian. In 2015, 531 passengers died in a vehicle, truck, or SUV driven by a teen driver, and 58 percent of those passengers were NOT buckled up at the time of the fatal crash.

To bring awareness of teen driver safety among teens and parents, top tire manufacturer Michelin has teamed up with football legend -; father of a teen driver -; Emmitt Smith in an educational campaign, "Coaching Your Teen Driver".

"Seventy-five percent of teen fatal auto crashes do not involve drugs or alcohol".

"As parents, we play a critical role in coaching our teens to be safe drivers". Classroom instruction and monitored practice may be helpful when learning the fundamentals of driving, but many teen drivers wish they'd learned more about what to do when things go wrong. By a huge margin, teen drivers rate their personal devices as the number one source of distraction behind the wheel, ahead of eating or drinking, friends, family, music and navigation. Make sure they're following the rules all the time and you do that by opening up a dialogue and having a good conversation with them. "We need parents to set the rules before their teens hit the road", added Martinez.

The award-winning program helps new drivers stay safe behind the wheel by capturing teen and parent interest with free hands-on driving clinics that pair newly licensed drivers with professional driving instructors.
