Storm Brian set to batter Britain just days after Ophelia

Ophelia to hit Donegal this afternoon- experts say from circa 3pm

A "dangerous" storm headed for United Kingdom shores could cause floods, traffic chaos and power outages, forecasters fear.

The remnants of Hurricane Ophelia killed three and damaged homes in Ireland, Wales and parts of England after unleashing torrential rain and blistering gusts.

A trail of destruction is left as storm Ophelia battles it's way through Britain. The strongest winds over the southern half of the British Isles, including areas that were impacted by Ophelia.

Wales, north-west England and most of southern England are likely to be affected, while Northern Ireland, which took the brunt of Ophelia, could face heavy rain from Thursday onwards.

There is potential for mean wind speeds of 50-60kph and gusts of between 90kph and 110kph, especially in coastal counties, Met Eireann explained.

"This storm system is going to be strong and risky".

The Arctic Monkeys-themed weather system will bring gale force winds and rain to the South of the United Kingdom on Saturday.

There's a "good chance" the storm will be named by the Irish Met or the Met Office during the next 24 hours, Mr Roys added.

Met Éireann has also called the weather system "Storm Brian" for the first time having earlier been reluctant to do so.

The warning, which comes into effect at 12 am tonight, will remain in place all day tomorrow with all of Munster and Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow and Meath warned to be on high alert.

"We're looking at gusts in excess of 50mph winds in the warning area but with gusts of up to 80mph on the coast".

It warned some coastal areas in the United Kingdom could be affected by large waves, with the potential for flooding.

Some transport disruption is likely across the warning area, with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport. It has warned of some transport disruption and short term loss of power and other services is also possible.

At present, Storm Brian is out over the Atlantic Ocean and is, what meteorologists describe as, a weather bomb.

An explosive cyclogenisis, or weather bomb, occurs when pressure drops by 24 millibars in 24 hours.

Classified by Met Éireann as a storm earlier on Thursday (19 October), its affects are predicted to be felt all across the United Kingdom with strong winds forecast for Wales, north-west England and most of southern England on the first day of many pupils' half-term holidays.

The forecaster has upgraded STATUS YELLOW warning to STATUS ORANGE for parts of the country which it expects will be worst hit by this weekend's weather which could be come what is known as a "weather bomb".

But the body is yet to officially name the weather front Storm Brian, which would be the second of 2017/18's storms.
