Even though court orders, honourable women won't enter Sabarimala: Prayar Gopalakrishnan

Sabarimala Temple

Some say women are banned as they are considered "unclean" during menstruation, while scholars say that it is because Ayyappa, to whom the temple is dedicated, was celibate.

Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Gopalakrishnan said that there are going to be huge security issues if all women are allowed entry.

Surendran also said that the CPI (M)-led LDF government in the state was of the view that there should not be gender- based discrimination for entry in temples.

The Supreme Court on Friday referred to its constitution bench the matter pertaining to a ban on the entry of women at Kerala's Sabarimala temple.

The bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan framed several questions raised by the public interest litigation and held that these should be decided by a constitutional bench.

The Indian Young Lawyers' Association filed a petition in the SC challenging the ban on entry of women in the Sabarimala temple.

The temple, situated in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, restricts women aged between 10 and 50 from visiting the premises. It was expected that the apex court is likely to announce the verdict today on whether women can enter the Sabarimala Temple.

Gopalakrishnan said both the custom and security and safety of women were their concerns on the matter.

Is this prohibition by the religious body valid under the purview of religious freedom under Article 25 of the Constitution? It said the constitution bench will also deal with the question whether this practice amounted to discrimination against the women. Initially, the LD Government followed the women's entry into the temple in 2007, which was later turned over to UDF Government. And if so, would it not run afoul of Articles 14 and 15 (3) of the Constitution by restricting entry of women on the ground of sex?
