US Bombers Fly Over Korean Peninsula in Show of Force

The B-1B Lancers, which flew from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, were joined by South Korean fighter jets after entering the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone about 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, the South Korean military said.

North Korea watchers have been on alert for a possible provocation by the communist state in the days surrounding a key holiday Tuesday to mark the founding anniversary of its ruling party.

North Korea has launched two missiles over Japan and conducted its sixth and biggest nuclear test in recent weeks in defiance of U.N. sanctions as it races towards its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States.

A statement from FireEye said: "North Korea linked hackers are among the most prolific nation-state threats, targeting not only the USA and South Korea but the global financial system and nations worldwide".

An unusually aggressive approach to the North by Trump, which has included rhetoric hinting at US strikes and threatening the destruction of North Korea's leadership, has some South Koreans fearful that war is closer than at any time since the Korean War ended in 1953 in a shaky cease-fire, leaving the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war.

Trump was briefed by Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford at a national security team meeting, the statement said.

"In my discussion with Secretary (Rex) Tillerson and Foreign Minister Kang (Kyung-wha), the aim was to ensure a peaceful negotiated outcome to the current tensions", the Aussie foreign minister said after being asked about how likely it was the countries would use military options against North Korea.

The Pentagon also declined to comment specifically on reports of the potential breach, but spokesman Col. Robert Manning said on Tuesday that the U.S. is "confident in the security of our operations plans and our ability to deal with any threat from North Korea".

In a surprising sign of weakness, the commentary also says that if North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would join the United States in the Korean Peninsula it would "change the balance of forces" against it.

Tensions between the USA and North Korea have intensified in recent months as the Trump administration has struggled to rein in Kim Jong-un's expanding nuclear and ballistic weapons programme.

Seoul says North Korea has repeatedly staged cyberattacks on South Korean business and government websites.

The United Nations Security Council, which has imposed a series of ever tighter sanctions on North Korea, has banned four ships from ports globally for carrying coal from North Korea, including one vessel that also had ammunition. China's influential Global Times tabloid expressed alarm at how far the rhetoric on both sides had gone and how it had increased the risk of a "fatal misjudgment".

Dmitri Alperovitch, co-founder of Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity firm, told NBC News in August: "We've been anxious for some time that one of the ways that North Korea can retaliate against further escalation of tensions is via cyber, and particularly attacks against our financial sector. This positive process is worth a try", the paper said in an editorial late on Tuesday. North Korea's possession of secret war plans would require a major overhaul of how South Korea and its ally Washington would respond if there's another war on the Korean Peninsula.

And while there are many in Washington who are willing to explore the possibility of talks, it is less clear whether President Donald Trump will personally be in favor of a former USA leader taking the spotlight.
