North Korean hackers suspected to have targeted U.S. electric power companies

North Korea hackers steal South Korea war plans

President Trump hosted a discussion on options to respond to any North Korean aggression, or, if necessary, to prevent Pyongyang from threatening the United States and its allies with nuclear weapons, the White House said in a statement.

Lim and Sullivan are expected to discuss cooperation on major issues including their bilateral relations and North Korea's nuclear program.

The exercises came hours after a South Korean lawmaker claimed North Korean hackers had stolen a large cache of military documents from his country, "including a plan to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, and wartime contingency plans drawn up by the US and South Korea", reports the BBC. Defense officials refused to comment when reached by other media.

North Korea did not conduct any launches or tests on Tuesday's anniversary.

"Although I will not comment on intelligence matters or specific incidents related to cyber intrusion, I can assure you that we are confident in the security of our operations plans and our ability to deal with any threat from North Korea", Pentagon spokesman Colonel Robert Manning told reporters.

China, North Korea's closest ally, has suggested that Pyongyang freeze its nuclear missile development while the USA stop conducting military exercises with the South that raise fears in North Korea.

"Thus far, the suspected North Korean actions are consistent with a desire to demonstrate a deterrent capability rather than a prelude to an unprovoked first-strike in cyberspace; however, North Korea linked actors are bold, have launched multiple cyber attacks created to demonstrate national strength and resolve, and have little concern for potential discovery and attribution of their operations", FireEye researchers said in a blog. Pyongyang belatedly responded by relocating some of its military aircraft to its east coast, the National Intelligence Service then said.

The bombers took off from the US Pacific territory of Guam on Tuesday night, before entering South Korean airspace and conducting firing exercises over the East Sea and Yellow Sea, South Korea's military said.

The drills were conducted not long after Lee broke the news about the alleged cyberattacks to reporters.

North Korea hackers have reportedly stolen a large number of military wars documents from South Korea, including a plan to assassinate the country's dictator, Kim Jong-un.

A pre-emptive strike against Pyongyang's leadership would be hard to undertake, but it's widely seen as the most realistic of the limited military options Seoul has to deny a nuclear attack from its rival.

North Korea expert, Lim Eul-chul, said: "It may sound insane to outsiders to fire missiles from a place he wants to develop economically, but that's how Kim runs his country".

Lee said that 235 gigabytes of military documents were taken, but the military has yet to identify 80 percent of the documents that were compromised.

Seoul says North Korea has repeatedly staged cyberattacks on South Korean business and government websites.

While the officials said the exercises are long scheduled and not in response to recent tensions, similar exercises have prompted strong condemnation from North Korea in the past.
