New Delhi bans fireworks for Diwali to combat chronic pollution

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who ruled the city-state for nearly 15 years, on Tuesday said that the firecracker ban on Diwali will disappoint people as it is a "sentimental religious celebration". Teams will ensure no cracker is allowed to enter and exit the district.

A group of traders on October 11 moved the Supreme Court seeking modification of the October 9 order by which the sale of firecrackers was banned in Delhi-NCR region till November 1. In a series of posts, the author had questioned the ban , As Reported By NDTV. "It's risky. They can still be caught for violating an apex court order".

The alumnus from the reputed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad has denounced the ban asking "what's Diwali for children without crackers". "It is a celebration of lights, festival of lights, let us all light diyas instead of fire crackers, spread love, peace and happiness", he said. Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has urged the government to file a review petition before the Supreme Court.

However, counsels appearing for the permanent licencees selling crackers, opposed the plea and said that the September 12 order, lifting the ban, was "well-reasoned" and passed after hearing all the parties, including the Central Pollution Control Board.

Even as the Supreme Court ordered a complete ban on sale of fireworks this Diwali on the ground, it may have forgotten to net the virtual shopping world to this end.

On October 6, a bench of Justices AK Sikri, Abhay Manohar Sapre and Ashok Bhushan reserved its order on the plea seeking restoration of the top court's previous year order banning the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.

It said the November 11 a year ago order, suspending all licences which "permit sale of fireworks, wholesale and retail within the territory of NCR", was passed by the court keeping in view the situation that had arisen after the last Diwali.
