UK's May signals plan to demote Foreign Minister Johnson, newspaper says

PM May stays in charge as challenge to premiership collapses

One cabinet minister said: 'He has completely failed.

UK FOREIGN SECRETARY Boris Johnson has called on his "so-called friends and allies" to stop telling newspapers that he's planning to move against Prime Minister Theresa May.

Asked about Mr Johnson, Sir Michael added: 'And the foreign secretary'.

The Prime Minister is instead being urged by members of her Cabinet to sack Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, for "making Brexit hard" and being "miserable".

"If Boris Johnson was to leave or be demoted as the weekend press is suggesting, that would be showing May's leadership and that her vision of Brexit is the one that will be going forward and that markets should be aligned to", said Viraj Patel, an FX strategist at ING Bank in London.

May indicated in an interview with the Sunday Times that she might consider a cabinet reshuffle, saying: "Part of my job is to make sure I always have the best people in my cabinet, to make the most of the wealth of talent available in the party".

In her first speech to MPs since a calamitous leader's speech in Manchester, Mrs May said the transitional period would be longer - "around two years".

With negotiations to resume on Monday in Brussels and investors rattled by the never-ending Westminster soap opera, May is moving to restore order.

Former justice minister and fellow Brexiteer Michael Gove also urged Leavers to rally behind May, tweeting: "Strong statement from PM on Brexit - let's be pragmatic over implementation to secure maximum freedom to diverge from European Union in end state".

Clarke added: "As she recalls the ultra Brexiteers including the present Foreign Secretary assured citizens during the Referendum campaign that no difference at all would take place in our trading relationships with Europe because they needed to sell us their Mercedes and their Prosecco".

"The country has had enough of the self-absorbed and, frankly, disloyal behaviour we have witnessed over recent weeks", he said in the Mail on Sunday.

But yesterday he stood by Mrs May and insisted that she will deliver a "great and successful Brexit".

Speaking to the BBC, Brexit minister Dominic Raab said preparations for a no deal were "well under way", adding that while the United Kingdom had to "strive for the very best outcome" from Brexit negotiations, it must also "prepare for all eventualities". Many believe she must quit before the next election, due in 2022, but worry that a leadership contest now will provoke an earlier vote that could result in a victory for Labour's Jeremy Corbyn.

A minister told The Telegraph: 'Let's say she tries to move Boris to defence secretary.

Speaking about her conference speech difficulties, May told the Sunday Times: "I am a very determined person. The truth is my feelings can be hurt, like everyone else, but I am pretty resilient".
