'We're not Nazis, you've shown that by electing me' - new Ukip leader

What does the future hold for Ukip

Nigel Farage may no longer be Ukip's leader but he still casts a long shadow over the party he hauled from the fringes to the political centrestage.

He said: "Brexit is our core task".

In a recent YouTube campaign film, he complained that "we have gone down the road of mediocracy and compromise, we don't like the idea of excelling of anything because we worry that it implies that somebody is less good".

"But I do not want UKIP to become a one-issue party centred around Islam".

He told Iain Dale the new leader had his "full support" and would be on hand to offer any advice.

Meanwhile Mr Hamilton insisted that UKIP still had a goal following the referendum vote for Brexit and the collapse in its vote at the general election in June.

It is thought if Ms Waters wins the leadership contest it could create a huge divide in the party.

Bolton, a former soldier and Thames Valley police officer, later worked for organisations such as the United Nations and Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe in Kosovo and other countries. A former soldier, Bolton is a one-time Lib Dem member who has worked as an European Union common defence strategist.

Quoting the "serve to lead" motto of the Sandhurst royal military academy - from which he was a graduate - Mr Bolton said: "I do not see myself now as being simply your leader, I see myself as serving this party".

Asked if he would "ban the burka", Mr Bolton said: "I don't think it's about banning the burka, is it?"

Mr Bolton said he believes in "old-fashioned, classical liberalism", but feels it has "lost its way a bit". He said that, while he was different to Farage, he had the qualities for the job: "I'm not Nigel".

Last year, his wife gave birth to their daughter Victoria on a train that had just pulled into St Pancras Station - his third daughter.

"Without being united, we can not lead", he said.

He defeated rival Anne Marie Waters, who had provoked controversy with hostile comments about Islam.

The favourite to replace her, Steven Woolfe, pulled out following an altercation with a fellow MEP at the European Parliament that left him hospitalised.

At the conference a year ago, members elected Diane James to succeed Farage, who stepped down after the Brexit referendum. Instead he suffered a hefty defeat in February's Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election and later resigned after leading the party to a disastrous result in the snap general election.
