Sanders: Trump attacking San Juan mayor is 'unspeakable'

Trump Attacks San Juan Mayor Who Criticized Hurricane Response

The White House says President Trump spoke early Sunday to Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló to reaffirm his administration's commitment to providing an "unprecedented federal response" to widespread hurricane damage and thank Rossello for his leadership. She said she meant "it was good news that people of Puerto Rico and many public servants of the United States are working together".

Mulvaney and Mnuchin's criticism follows a White House official's anonymous statement on Saturday suggesting that Cruz has been "too busy doing TV" to properly gauge federal relief efforts.

The acting USA homeland security secretary is praising the resilience of Puerto Ricans and says daunting work lies ahead to help recover from hurricane devastation. At a shelter an hour outside of San Juan, a woman named Josefina Alvarez, who suffers from diabetes, was in a dire situation.

"You know, I get four pallets of food, three pallets of water, that's really not even going to provide for a dent", Cruz said.

Ms. Cruz explained in a television interview on Sunday that "there's only one goal, and it's saving lives", adding that all she did "was ask for help". We will never be satisfied.

Cruz had been among the harshest critics of Trump's response to hurricanes Irma and Maria, which have killed at least 16 people and left millions across Puerto Rico without food, water and electricity in recent weeks. "When you're drinking from a creek, it's not a good news story". Almost half of the supermarkets have reopened, albeit with reduced hours, and about 60 percent of the gas stations have begun pumping, many protected by armed private security guards.

That default divisiveness makes Trump different than every person who has held the office before him.

"Then we start a theme of recovery planning for the bright future that lies ahead for Puerto Rico", Bossert continued.

Puerto Rico, which earlier this year filed the biggest bankruptcy in USA municipal history, is struggling to regain economic stability in the face of a $72 billion debt load and near-insolvent public health and pension systems. Duke is traveling with a Coast Guard vice admiral and others.

"Dammit, this is not a good-news story".

He also said that the mayor was complimentary of the efforts just a few days ago, but "has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump".

"I'm not a hero here", said CBS News' David Begnaud, who has been in Puerto Rico since before Maria hit on September 20.

Cruz's comments on Friday were in response to a senior USA official calling the disaster response in Puerto Rico "a good news story".

"The Puerto Rican community", says Abner Breban of Atlanta, "has come together like never in the city of Atlanta".

"This is a "people are dying" story", she said in disbelief.

"Most of our nursing homes have people that have an inability to move, so they're stuck in the 14th floor, they have no water, they have no food, they - majority are insulin-dependent", she said.

"The military and first responders, despite no electric, roads, phones etc., have done an awesome job".

"We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency and the bureaucracy", Carmen Yulín Cruz said Friday at a news conference. But on Wednesday, an army veteran told NPR that Puerto Rico needs 50,000. "Big decisions will have to be made as to the cost of its rebuilding!"
