Facebook, Twitter, Google Invited for November 1 Senate Hearing

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg rejected US President Donald Trump's assertion the social network was against him

In a blog post, Twitter noted, "Due to the nature of these inquiries, we may not always be able to publicly share what we discuss with investigators". Those accounts, operated by human users and suspected bots alike, pushed the opposing messages surrounding the NFL and the playing of the national anthem, researchers said. Twitter reports that 22 of those Facebook accounts "had corresponding accounts on Twitter".

Out of the 450 accounts that Facebook had shared as part of its review, some 22 also had accounts on Twitter.

The news follows similar disclosures from Facebook earlier this month, and Twitter's meeting in Washington comes as Congress is pursuing its investigation into how Russians may have used social media platforms to interfere in the 2016 election cycle. "Twitter is in dialogue with congressional committees with respect to investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election", Twitter said on Friday.

Officials from Twitter were on Capitol Hill on Thursday to tell congressional investigators about Russia's use of the social media platform to attempt to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Twitter Inc. disclosed details about suspicious activity on its network during the USA election after it met with two congressional committees conducting probes into Russian meddling, but a top Democrat slammed their presentation as "deeply disappointing".

Twitter added that it found another 179 associated accounts, but none was registered as an advertiser. The Russian government-backed site spent as much as $274,100 on the USA -targeted ads in 2016, primarily for news stories and targeting them at followers of mainstream media accounts. The company shared with committee staff a round-up of ads that were targeted to the United States market in 2016 by three Russia Today (RT) accounts. Mark Warner, called the meeting "inadequate on nearly every level".

"Since the election Twitter says it has made several changes to make the platform a safer place for users and is looking to continue making it a better place for users who would like more transparency".

"Twitter deeply respects the integrity of the election process, which is a cornerstone for all democracies", Twitter said in a statement.

Warner on Thursday called that work "derivative" and said it showed "an enormous lack of understanding from the Twitter team of how serious this issue is".

Committee member Mark Warner, a Democratic senator from Virginia, said in a press conference after the briefings that Twitter's findings were "inadequate", according to Recode.
