Trump points to Iran missile test in criticizing nuke deal

Donald Trump Nikki Haley United Nations

Iranian state-run television reported Saturday that its military has successfully test-fired a newly developed ballistic missile displayed publicly for the first time the previous day.

The unveiling by the Revolutionary Guard came during a military parade in Tehran that commemorated the 1980s Iraq-Iran war.

Washington has imposed unilateral sanctions against Iran, saying Tehran's ballistic-missile tests violated a United Nations resolution that endorsed the nuclear deal and called on Tehran not to undertake activities related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

President Trump has promised over and over again to adopt a much harder line in the direction of Iran, intimidating at numerous time to negotiate or maybe take apart this 2015 nuclear option, as well as blast Iranian boats out from the waters should they pressure United states naval ships.

Rouhani said that the country will boost its military capabilities, from missiles to ground, air and sea forces. US officials say such "malign activities" go against the spirit of the 2015 agreement under which Iran won relief from global sanctions in exchange for shelving its nuclear program.

However, UN Security Council Resolution 2231 calls upon Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.

"Whether you like it or not we are going to help Syria, Yemen and Palestine, and we will strengthen our missiles".

Furthermore, Mr. Hatami said that Iran would 'not seek permission from any country for producing various kinds of missile'.

Rowhani later told a news conference that the Trump administration is seeking "an excuse" to pull out of the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement that capped Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of global sanctions on Iran. Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation are parties to the pact.

"The net result is that Washington and Tehran are accusing each other of not living up to the spirit of the nuclear agreement".

Rouhani said the United States and Israel have isolated themselves by opposing the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the other major powers.

"For Rouhani, reasserting Iran's ballistic missile ambitions provides cover against hard-line critics that see the nuclear agreement as a capitulation to world powers".

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said tensions on the Korean peninsula underlined the importance of the Iranian deal, and that China would continue to support it.
