Chelsea agree to sell Diego Costa to former club Atletico Madrid

Premier League champions Chelsea have reportedly agreed a mega million deal to sell embattled striker Diego Costa to Spanish club Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish global doesn't want to miss the plane for Russian Federation 2018, but won't be able to play until January, when the Colchoneros will be allowed to sign players again.

That ban expires in January, which is when Costa will become available.

Costa joined Chelsea from Atletico in July 2014 for 32 million pounds ($41.2 million at the time) on a five-year deal.

Costa has not featured for Chelsea this season, after he was told through text message that he is not in Antonio Conte's plan.

Costa at first refused to return to training at Cobham, opting to remain in his native Brazil.

But despite Atlético now being subjected to a transfer ban, a statement from Chelsea on Thursday confirmed that the 28-year-old is set to rejoin the club three years after he moved to London for £32m.

But should he pass the medical and agree terms swiftly, he could find himself paraded on Wednesday as Atletico Madrid welcome the West Lononders to their new stadium.

"The agreement is pending formalisation of the contract between our club and the Spain global striker".

Chelsea striker Diego Costa will rejoin Atletico Madrid when the transfer window reopens in January. The combative forward played a key role in the Blues title win last season, with 20 goals in 35 Premier League games.

May 28: Costa insists he does not wish to move to China and only wants to move to Atletico if he leaves Chelsea.
