Congo-Kinshasa: Dozens of Burundians Killed in Clashes With DRC Forces

Congo is home to thousands of Burundian refugees

More than 100 victims were injured during the confrontations at Kamanyola in the unsafe eastern DRC.

In total, according to the latest information, around 37 people were killed (36 Burundian and one member of the armed forces) and between 117 and 134 people were injured. Thirty-nine gravely wounded Burundian refugees were evacuated by helicopter to the city of Bukavu, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo said.

The UN envoy called for a swift investigation and urged Congo's security forces to use force as a last resort.

Burundi's foreign minister, Alain-Aime Nyamitwe, on Twitter described the incident as a "shooting" and said "explanations are needed".

Congolese police and soldiers opened fire as the migrants protested plans to send some of them home from the town of Kamanyola in the east of the country, activists say.

Tens of thousands of Burundians have fled to the eastern DR Congo to escape a wave of violence that unfurled in 2015 after Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza sought a fiercely contested third term in office. Congolese soldiers responded with gunfire when some refugees hurled stones, said refugee Aline Nduwarugira.

A Burundian refugee told AFP: "I saw people falling down, men, women and children who were completely unarmed".

It was not immediately clear why the four refugees had been detained.

"So far, we have counted 31 dead and at least 105 injured, 15 of them seriously", the refugee said.
