Jose predicted to become tropical storm

Hurricane Jose is forecast to make a full loop in the Atlantic before possibly following a track that would put it near the southeast coast this weekend

Thankfully, Hurricane Jose doesn't pose a great threat at this time.

The so-called cone of uncertainty for Tropical Storm Jose now includes North Carolina's Outer Banks after the National Hurricane Center shifted its forecast west Thursday.

Jose, which has maximum sustained winds of 120 kph (75 mph), is moving southeast at 13 kph (8 mph), the NHC said in a public advisory released at 0900 GMT.

The report added that "tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center".

It's a category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 miles per hour and, because of wind shear, may weaken to a tropical storm later Tuesday.

Some of our long range guidance shows Jose drifting back to the west, approaching the Mid-Atlantic and New England during the middle of next week. There are no warnings or watches with the storm but surf swells are being generated that are impacting Bermuda, the Bahamas, the northern coasts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico and the southeast coast of the US, including North Carolina. Some restrengthening should begin on Friday, and Jose is predicted to become a Category 1 hurricane again by the weekend.

As Tropical Storm Jose moves northwestward, north of the Bahamas, two disturbances are drifting westward in the eastern Atlantic.

"These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions", center officials said.

After the Caribbean was left devastated by Hurricane Irma last week, there was worry that Jose could do further damage.
