Race to rescue survivors of Mexico quake

The race to rescue those trapped in the rubble continued on Saturday after at least 61 people were killed in the most powerful quake to hit Mexico in a century that struck off the southern coast, toppling houses, damaging hospitals and government offices, and sparking mass evacuations.

The powerful 8.1 tremor that hit the southern states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Oaxaca registered 8.2 on the Richter scale, damaging buildings and created fear of Tsunami.

About half of the city hall collapsed in a pile of rubble, and streets were littered with the debris of ruined houses.

As residents attempted to dig themselves out, Hurricane Katia hit the Gulf coast state of Veracruz late Friday, triggering a mudslide that killed two people.

Though seismic activity is common in Mexico, officials said Thursday's quake was the strongest to hit the country in 100 years.

State authorities in Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco, the regions hardest hit by the quake, have updated known deceased, bringing the total to 61.

At least 15 people died in neighbouring Chiapas, and its governor Manuel Velasco said some 41,000 houses were damaged, estimating almost 1.5 million people were affected.

Miami Herald reports that AT&T, Verizon and Sprint will also waive fees to regions affected by Hurricane Irma.

The natural disaster directly affected the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca.

Mexico sits atop five tectonic plates, whose movement makes it one of the most seismically active countries in the world. The other, an infant on a respirator, died after the quake triggered a power outage.

The 8.2-magnitude quake was felt by about 50 million people across the country.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had originally said a tsunami of more than three meters (10 feet) was possible.

The ministry's center for worldwide cooperation along with the Israeli Embassy in Mexico is to provide aid for the southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas that were hardest hit in the deadly quake that struck late Thursday night.

In neighboring Guatemala, President Jimmy Morales appeared on national television to call for calm while emergency crews surveyed damage.
