Nadal vs. del Potro, Carreno Busta vs

Tennis- US Open

Even though he co-opted a practice normally reserved for the victor of a Grand Slam final, Anderson had made a most unlikely run to reach this U.S. Open final.

Anderson, born in Johannesburg in May 1986 follows in the footsteps of Kevin Curren, who reached the 1985 Wimbledon final three months after becoming a naturalised US citizen, and Johan Kriek, who made the US Open final in 1980. They took advantage of all of the injury absences of top players, most notably major title owners Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray, but also Grand Slam runners-up Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori.

Anderson is the first South African to reach the US Open final here since Cliff Drysdale lost to Manuel Santana on the grass of nearby Forest Hills in 1965.

The Spaniard appeared near the peak of his powers in Friday night's four-set win over Juan Martin Del Potro, to the extent that nobody is giving Anderson, the 31-year-old world No 32, much of chance.

Carreno Busta's serve was the first to come under any kind of pressure in the sixth game of the match, but he held from 30-30 before striking what proved the decisive blow in the opener as Anderson fired a backhand long to hand him the break.

The 6ft 8in Anderson needed some inspiration and he found it in the second set with a backhand cross-court victor that brought him level at one set all. Had Anderson not saved a set point in the fourth, the match could well have escaped him in a decider. In a hard fought battle of four sets, Anderson managed to pull off a big win by 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 to enter his maiden Grand Slam semifinal. Their only other clash was in 2013 on Casablanca clay, which Anderson won 6-3, 6-3. Being in a semifinal, he said, left him "unbelievably nervous starting out" against an opponent in the same semifinal-debut circumstance. "But I'm going to have another opportunity to go one step further". Across the first five rounds, he has dropped just two sets and played dominant tennis everytime he stepped on the court.

Kevin Anderson next faces either world number one Rafael Nadal in the first ever Grand Slam final of his career.

'I really don't know what to say right now, ' admitted Anderson in his on-court interview. "I've put in a lot of work, so it feels good to reach a milestone I haven't before".

I like Nadal to win another grand slam title. If he starts strong and gets some momentum, he might be able to take the first set, but that'll be it. Anderson has faced just eight break points in his last three matches combined. That said, fatigue could be a factor for Anderson after his last match against Querrey. "He said:" If he's in the final, he can beat everyone.

Starting the fourth set serving, it was a bright start for Carreno Busta as he looked to have regained his composure and found the momentum.
