United States military options on North Korea 'very ugly'

South Korea's Meteorological Administration shows seismic activity from North Korea following the test

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Sunday that he's preparing a sanctions package against North Korea that would cut off "all trade and other business", with the rogue nation following its overnight nuclear test, its sixth and most powerful.

"We have many military options and the president wanted to be briefed on each one of them", Mattis said.

After concluding his statement, Mattis walked away as reporters shouted follow up questions, refusing to confirm whether he believes North Korea can mount a nuclear warhead on a missile, whether it was, indeed, a hydrogen bomb, or if President Trump intends to go to war with Pyongyang.

For years, the problem with any USA military action against North Korea's nuclear program has been the mass of conventional artillery Pyongyang keeps in range of Seoul, a metropolitan area of 25 million people.

"South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing!" he tweeted.

The U.N. Security Council is slated to hold an emergency meeting Monday in the wake of North Korea's latest act of aggression.

China's full response to the nuclear test, which it "strongly opposed", will depend on the forthcoming debate in the United Nations Security Council, the spokesman said.

In his brief statement to reporters, Mattis said the worldwide community is unified in demanding the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and said the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, should know that Washington's commitment to Japan and South Korea is unshakeable. And it apparently triggered an artificial quake of at least a 5.7 magnitude.

The Prime Minister's spokesperson wouldn't get behind the US Defense Secretary's demands for a "massively military response" on the communist state.

Meanwhile, world leaders, including those from France, Russia and China, also condemned Sunday's test. The UN Security Council unanimously voted last month to impose sanctions on Pyongyang after the country launched a series of ICBMs.

In recent interviews, experts on the topic offered CBN News their assessment of Pyongyang's nuclear abilities.

North Korea claimed "perfect success" in an underground test of what it called a hydrogen bomb - potentially vastly more destructive than an atomic bomb.

Neighboring South Korea estimated the blast had a strength of 100 kilotons - several times more powerful than previous tests or the bombs dropped by the US on two Japanese cities in World War II.

David Albright of the Institute for Science and International Security was skeptical that the Kim regime had successfully tested an actual hydrogen bomb but noted that their latest test yielded a more devastating blast than previous attempts.

If a hydrogen bomb struck NY, for example, the death toll could reach close to 3.5 million.

South Korea's military also said it had carried out a combined live-fire exercise targeting the North's nuclear testing site and involving the Hyunmoo ballistic missile and F-15K fighter jets.
