Six ministers dropped in Cabinet reshuffle

Union Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said

Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti, Minister of State (MoS) for Commerce, Industry and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman have stepped down from their positions.

"This is a decision by the Prime Minister, the government and the party and we are the soldiers of the party".

This will be the third such reshuffle since Modi took over in May 2014.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had also hinted to have offered to resign after Kalinga-Utkal Express crash but was asked to "wait" by the Prime Minister. Pandey, 59, is an MP from Chandauli and a brahmin.

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh may see his portfolio changed. Five junior ministers were also dropped.

Earlier on Thursday, as Firstpost had reported, Mahendra Nath Pandey, a minister of state in the HRD ministry was appointed as the state president of BJP Uttar Pradesh, indicating that the process for cabinet reshuffle-cum-expansion has already been set in motion.

Rudy, reports claim, would be assigned a crucial organisational role in the party to compensate his exit from the Cabinet. Rudy may be given some important post in the party. At least two members of the JD (U) are also likely to join.

Talk of a reshuffle gained ground after the BJP last month chose its senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu as its vice-presidential candidate.

A cabinet reshuffle has been on the cards since Manohar Parrikar resigned as Defence Minister to become Chief Minister of Goa.

Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan is holding additional charge of the Environment Ministry following the death of Anil Madhav Dave in May. Besides Jaitley, three other union ministers are holding additional charges of different ministries.

The Opposition has been criticising the Government for not having a "full-time" Defence Minister amid border tensions with Pakistan and China.

BJP chief Amit Shah-who held a meeting with some senior ministers at his residence on Thursday morning-met Modi later in the day.

Union minister Arun Jaitley, who is in charge of the party's Gujarat polls, had attended the meeting, along with Narendra Singh Tomar, PP Chaudhury, Jitendra Singh and Niramala Sitharaman.
