Transfer: PSG Grabs Mbappe

Manchester United's Paul Pogba watches on as Les Bleus were put through their paces

While Mbappe and Neymar arrived, Serge Aurier and Blaise Matuidi were among the departures, but eyebrows were raised across Europe at whether PSG were following FFP rules with their unprecedented player expenditure.

The France worldwide, who was linked with many of Europe's top clubs during the transfer window, including Barcelona, is PSG's fourth signing of the window after Neymar and defenders Yuri Berchiche and Dani Alves.

Of course, the move is marred by what could be seen as a controversial work around Financial Fair Player (FFP) regulations, but only adds to the narrative and doesn't take away from Mbappe being a superb recruit for PSG.

UEFA considers Fair Play Financial as a fundamental system to ensure the financial sustainability of European football. He scored 15 goals and registered eight assists in the league, while scoring another nine goals in the Champions League and cup competitions during the 2016/17 season.

Carlo Ancelotti didn't rate the midfielder too highly in front of the others he had at his disposal and he struggled for game time all season.

"I know my choice might come as a surprise to many and the decision to leave was tough after being a part of the club for so many years", Oxlade-Chamberlain said in a Twitter post.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: "It was essential for French football that we keep and help develop such a great talent in our championship".

Under the terms of the agreement with Monaco, PSG must pay a reported €180 million (£165.9m) fee next summer in order to turn the deal into a permanent one and it's widely viewed that this has triggered concerns as to if they've met UEFA's FFP obligations.

But PSG were at least trying to work within the FFP system when they structured Mbappe's deal to begin with an initial loan, which could allow the club time to balance their books.

Reports in Spain had suggested that both Barcelona and Real Madrid - whom were long considered the frontrunners to sign Mbappe - had complained to UEFA about PSG's conduct this summer. Mbappe was expected to join as recently as last week, but the move only just made it through before the transfer window shuts at midnight Thursday.

PSG identified the acquisitions of Neymar and Mbappe as "a new phase in its project to build a club and a world leading sports franchise".

"The worldwide French striker is transferred on a loan basis from AS Monaco until June 30 2018", PSG said in a statement on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency.

In their response to the investigation, PSG said they had already written off €104m including wages, this summer, and hinted that more players were likely to be sold before UEFA examines its books.
