US Open 2017: Maria Sharapova beats Timea Babos to reach third round

Sharapova Claims First Victory In US Open

The match spanned two days after dark storm clouds opened up and washed out play on Tuesday.

Sharapova's game was filled with mistakes during the 7-6 (4) first set against Babos: 19 unforced errors, including four double-faults.

Babos retrieved an early break in the second and then had two chances to open up a 4-2 lead. Babos reacted with a loud yell.

One thing that has made the road back to the Open less tough, Sharapova said, is the encouragement from fans who backed her during her doping troubles.

But even as Sharapova competes here, she remains the poster woman for Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" program. Her outfit Wednesday afternoon is a light shade of that dress.

In her US Open debut in 2003, Sharapova was ranked No. 54.

Nick Kyrgios couldn't overcome problems with his shoulder or countryman John Millman. Certainly when I play against them, in terms of the level they play with.

"Coming to US Open and having a dark past in the results, I keep it with low expectations", Muguruza said. "I've done it before.' I want to have that feeling again", Sharapova said.

The Canberran thought he'd turned a corner when he reached the final in Cincinnati almost two weeks ago, but a shoulder injury conspired against him, and he waved the white flag after two hours and fifteen minutes.

In other first round matches, No. 8 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation defeated Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), No. 10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland beat Petra Martic of Croatia 6-4, 7-6 (3), and No. 20 seed Coco Vandeweghe from the United States beat fellow American Alison Riske 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

This tournament does indeed crown the US champion, but it is also a tournament for the fans, who turn out in staggering numbers on an annual basis and all but overran the grounds this day on which 87 singles matches were held in a makeup for Tuesday's rained out grounds session. The U.S. Tennis Association did grant a wild card to Sharapova, who was once ranked No. 1 but is now 146th. Grigor Dimitrov, the men's seventh seed, also had little trouble with his opener, Vaclav Safranek, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

However, the Czech was able to steal that set upon the resumption of play before Svitolina hit back to take the final set 6-3, lining up a meeting with Rodina in the process. Federer finally wrapped up the victory in the next game, but Martin Blackman, general manager of player development, said that showed how comfortable Tiafoe is on the big stage. "My game has continued to improve, I've learned to control the points, and I go into Friday's match with a lot of confidence".

Dominic Thiem didn't need long to finish off his first-round victory once play resumed.

But she looked much more like a player who has played just one match since May in the first set against Babos, a Hungarian ranked 59.

There were 87 singles matches scheduled for Wednesday after rain wiped out almost all of the day's play on Tuesday.

The weather shouldn't be a problem Wednesday, with sunny skies and almost ideal conditions.

After her epic first-round victory over second seed Simona Halep, Sharapova was being touted by some pundits as a potential title contender. She faces Timea Babos of Hungary.
