May also strongly condemned the launch.Japan's foreign ministry said the two leaders are expected to agree on the importance of China's role in ramping up pressure on North Korea.BREXIT EFFECTJapan has been unusually outspoken about its concerns that Britain's departure from the European Union, which was decided by a public vote in 2016, could affect current and future Japanese investments in Britain.Britain is the second most important destination for Japanese investment after the United States, with firms like Nissan, Toyota and Hitachi investing billions in carmaking, energy and transport. "We see that the best way of doing that is for China to be bringing pressure to bear on North Korea", May told reporters on her way to Japan for meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

On Tuesday, North Korea test fired an intermediate-range Hwasong-12 ballistic missile.

Britain, whose Prime Minister Theresa May is visiting Japan, has called for new United Nations sanctions against North Korea that would target guest workers sent mostly to Russian Federation and China, and whose wages are a source of revenue for Pyongyang.

Security and defence was always due to be high on the agenda during the Mrs May's three-day trip to Japan, but recent events have added urgency to the talks.

May also told Abe that Britain was pushing for the completion of an EU-Japan trade deal, which could then be used as a model for a future British-Japanese trading agreement.

She will hold a joint press conference with Abe today evening and meet Emperor Akihito on Friday before leaving.

She will attempt to reassure Japanese businesses that the United Kingdom will not fall off a cliff edge when it quits the EU.

"The UK is clear that it wants a smooth and orderly transition to its new relationship with the European Union and our key partners, including Japan", said the joint declaration.

That is the subject of ongoing negotiations in Brussels between Brexit Secretary David Davis and the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier.

In a report past year, the Japanese foreign minister warned Brexit could result in Japanese firms moving their European head offices out of Britain.

"Our intention would be for our deal to come into force pretty much immediately", a government source said on Thursday.

Nomura bank, Hitachi and carmakers Honda, Nissan and Toyota all have bases in the UK.
