US Open 2017: Defending champion Angelique Kerber upset by Naomi Osaka

2:10 | Tennis U.S. Open Lack of Big Names Shouldn't Impact Competition

Kerber's misfortune continued when she ran into 19-year-old rising star and developing buzzsaw Naomi Osaka in the first round at the US Open. A double-fault set up the teenager's only break point and a backhand error in the ensuing point from Kerber gave Osaka the break.

Kerber reclaimed it and lost it several times but there were serious concerns over her form going into the US Open and Osaka was merciless in exposing the her weaknesses. She would hold serve in the ensuing game to take the opening set. After breaking again for a 4-1 lead the wind had left Kerber's sails.

In turn, Osaka has earned a victory that could propel her into the next tier of WTA players.

There was better news for world number one Karolina Pliskova, who has headed in the opposite direction to Kerber after losing to the German in the final here past year. "So that helped me focus and concentrate, which I needed as Angelique gets everything back".

"I know that I will not be giving up like this".

With torrential rain drenching the outside courts - allowing just three women's matches to finish by mid-afternoon - Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at least had the comfort of knowing that they would begin under the roof.

Osaka moves on to play the victor of Rebecca Peterson of Sweden and Czech Republic's Denisa Allertova, whose match was postponed due to rain on Tuesday.

Top seed Karolina Pliskovastarted off her tournament with a win, dispatching Poland's Magda Linette 6-2, 6-1 on a day when rain interrupted play.

"I felt a little bit nervous walking on this court, especially after previous year and the memories I have here", said Pliskova, whose progression to the second round was only briefly halted by the roof on Arthur Ashe stadium being closed.

The Czech hit 28 winners and converted on five break points while saving nine of the 10 she faced to advance in one hour and 18 minutes.

"But for me it was for sure not the best day and not the best match".

Pliskova said: "I was a little bit nervous this morning before the match".

The game could be better.

"After Wimbledon I was actually confident, because I was practising good".

Pliskova will play the victor of American Nicole Gibbs and Paraguay's Veronica Cepede Royg.

The only other matches completed were No23 seed Barbora Strycova's win over Misaki Doi, Yanina Wickmayer's win over No28 seed Lesia Tsurenko, and Sorana Cirstea's win over Lesley Kerkhove.
