Merkel Says Sanctions To Be Lifted Once Ceasefire In Donbass Implemented

Europe migrant crisis: Germany and Egypt agree deal to stem migrant flow

Sanctions against Russian Federation will be lifted when there is no reason for them, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday.

The only thing she could say, Merkel added, is that things were now much better than a year ago "when I anxious a great deal more".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's main election opponent stepped up his attacks on her record, portraying her as slow to tackle the country's diesel-car crisis, soft on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and out of touch with voters.

"This has definitely generated some self-confidence", Merkel said.

"We will have to wait and see how the situation develops", said Merkel.

"Some believe the problems in Germany can be fixed by screaming - but I don't think so", she said.

The CDU and its Bavaria sister party Christian Socialist Union, led the opinion polls with around 39 percent, while the major opposition party, the Social Democratic Party led by Martin Schulz, came as the runner-up with about 22 percent.

Merkel and the European Union have already sealed a migrants deal with Turkey to stem the flow from the Middle East and her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said the Egypt deal would "fight illegal immigration and the criminal smuggling of people".

Her response to the migrant crisis has inflicted political damage on her party with the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party expected to win 10% of the vote in September.

The statement further said that Germany would also help Cairo to improve conditions of facilities designated for Syrian refugees and other displaced people in Egypt, adding that both countries further agreed to work more closely to mount crackdown on human traffickers, who bring desperate refugees into Europe through perilous Mediterranean routs.

He also accused Merkel of shying away from a real debate after she reportedly rejected a television network's proposals to change up the format to allow for more spontaneity when the pair face off next Sunday. Her mother had migrated from Ghana to Germany. Trump famously did not respond to Merkel's question of "Do you want to have a handshake?" in front of photographers and reporters when they met in March, even though they shook hands other times during her White House visit.

But she says "Europe itself still hasn't done its homework to this day", with some countries refusing to accept a share of the refugees arriving in Europe.

The volume and intensity of the protests have been especially strong in her home region in formerly communist eastern Germany.

Asked what she could do to spice up what has so far been a somnolent election campaign, seemingly bereft of real debate, Merkel insisted she wasn't bored.
