Iran welcomes restoring of Qatari relations

In Paris for peace talks July 2017. French President Emmanuel Macron is flanked in Paris by Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj of the Government of National Accord and General Khalifa Haftar head of the Libyan National Army

The diplomatic crisis began June 5, when Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates cut ties to Qatar alleging it was funding extremists and is too close to Iran.

The ministry's statement said the two "discussed bilateral relations and means of boosting and developing them, as well as a number of issues of common concern".

Qatar was among Saudi allies who followed suit to limit ties with Iran after it severed relations with Tehran in January 2016.

On Thursday, and in reaction to that news, Emirati State Minister for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash questioned the reasoning behind Doha's move. But Qatar seems prepared to stand its ground and has been relying on food and material imports from Iran, Turkey and Oman to beat the embargo.

"The State of Qatar expressed its aspiration to strengthen bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in all fields", the statement also read. Attempts by Kuwait, the US and others have failed to make headway.

Qatar recalled its ambassador to Tehran in January previous year after Saudi Arabia cut ties with the Islamic Republic, following angry protests held outside its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad against the kingdom's execution of senior Shiite cleric Ayatollah Nimr al-Nimr.

The decision came despite Iranian officials' condemnation of the attacks and prosecution of perpetrators. Qatar and Iran share a massive offshore natural gas field, called the South Pars Field by Tehran and the North Field by Doha. The coalition of Arab countries have imposed travel restrictions and economic sanctions on Qatar since June. Doha did not mention the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf region, in which its neighbours made a decision to cut their ties with it in June.

Qatar's official television station has counted almost 1,100 articles and 600 cartoons in Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and Bahrain's media, as well as 3,500 tweets by officials and journalists from those countries.

Translation: "The management of the crisis caused the burning of bridges, the squandering of sovereignty and the deepening of the Qatari crisis and undermined what remained of the mediator's chances".

They've also demanded Qatar close Al Jazeera, reduce ties with Iran and shut its Turkish military base if it wants the blockade to end. "It really has", AP quoted her as saying.
