Six Flags are now one; flagship park pulls down non-American flags

The Confederate States of America flag flew over Texas from 1861-1865.

"We always choose to focus on celebrating the things that unite us versus those that divide us", a Six Flags spokeswoman told the paper. "As such, we have changed the flag displays in our park to feature American flags".

A statement explained the theme park's reasons for the move, after it had previously declined to remove the controversial Confederate flag.

The park was named for the six flags that've flown over Texas.

The park previously stood behind its display of the Confederate flag, but chose to make a change after the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last week, Fox News reported.

Six Flags has changed the flags at all of its theme parks nationwide after drawing criticism from Fox News, TMZ and others earlier this week. It is not the same flag as the better known Confederate Battle flag.

They claimed that white supremacists and neo-Nazis adopted the Battle flag, not the original Confederate flag they have at the park.

ARLINGTON-Six Flags is filled with tradition.

The change came, park officials said, in response to the violence last weekend in Charlottesville, Va., caused when Nazis and white supremacists "rallied" supposedly in support of Confederate monuments and symbols. The other five - France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas and the Confederacy - representing the five other countries to which Texas has "belonged", are being removed.

That was part of the company's rationale just yesterday, when it said it would not remove the Confederate flag.
