Japan providing crucial diplomatic support to India in Doklam standoff

Army Navy IAF chiefs review country's security preparedness

Kenji Hiramatsu, the Japanese Ambassador in New Delhi, had told a newspaper that "all parties involved should not resort to unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force". The video also called Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration "asleep", "thick-skinned", and said that the actions of India in the border area were like "a robber who had just broken into your house and refused to leave".

Asked about the reported comments of the Japanese Ambassador on Doklam face off and if India welcomes it, Kumar gave a very guarded reaction, saying the remarks speak for themselves.

The statement from Japan endorses India's position that China violated agreements with India and Bhutan when it attempted to build a road through the Doklam plateau which is claimed to be a part of Bhutan.

But instead, Xinhua's video quickly provoked strong reactions in India, China and around the world, where it was widely described as racist.

Though there have been instances in the past as well when China has not sent the hydrological data, its act in the present context is seen in the light of the ongoing stand-off in Doklam.

Amid Doklam standoff, the Chinese Navy has invited the Indian Navy to join hands with the former in order to strengthen security of the Indian Ocean.

The Army officers of India and China had met on Wednesday in Leh's Chusul sector where Indian side raised the issue of attempt by Chinese soldiers to enter Indian territory along the banks of Pangong lake.

The Japanese reaction follows two separate interventions by the U.S. calling for direct dialogue between India and China to resolve the crisis while cautioning against unilateral changes on the ground.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar also claimed that China has not shared any hydrological data with India this year.

On whether the border dispute would impact economic relations, he said: "Given the lopsided trade balance between India and China, the trade ties will definitely be affected".

India's imports from China dipped to Dollars 61.28 billion in 2016-17 as against USD 61.7 billion in the previous year.

India's so-called "security concerns" over China's road-building activities is clearly ill-founded.
