Facebook to demote misleading videos

Facebook Rolls Out New Video Options

Facebook, the world's most-popular social-networking platform, has confirmed that it is downranking video clickbait and fake play buttons.

The social network faced heavy criticism in the wake of the 2016 US Presidential elections for allowing inaccurate stories to proliferate on its platform, and for creating a "bubble" that made it more hard for users to access stories outside their typical news sources or areas of interest.

Today it started downranking the News Feed presence of links that display a fake play button in the preview image, as well as videos that are actually just a static image uploaded as a video file.

"As video watching behaviors continue to change, we will continue to give advertisers more flexibility and control over their ad placements and look for more ways to provide audiences with great ad experiences across devices, content types, and ad formats", a Facebook Business post reads.

The development forms part of its efforts to fight clickbait and improve the integrity of information on Facebook.

Facebook said in its blog post on the matter that "Spammers often use fake play buttons to trick people into clicking links to low quality websites".

The company makes frequent changes to the News Feed, typically testing potential features at length before making them official.

Facebook warned that publishers who rely on these "intentionally deceptive practices" should brace themselves for a dramatic decrease in the distribution of these fake stories.

These updates follow a series of actions Facebook has taken to limit clickbait.

Moving forward, the company will be demoting stories featuring clickbait videos.
