Competing with Henne for starting job

He said Bortles was part of an offensive line that the entire team were confident

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven't even made it to the regular season, and already the frustration seems to be at a whole new level when it comes to Blake Bortles following the team's 12-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday. Even though the decision had been planned beforehand, it surely creates the appearance that Marrone and football czar Tom Coughlin are wavering in their commitment to Bortles.

Chad Henne's numbers (6-of-10 passing, 44 yards) don't look all that impressive, but three of his incompletions were clear drops - including two that should have been touchdowns. "If there's any struggle or things we don't like, then obviously we're going to be smart enough to throw that crap out".

"I told them what I'm looking for is, I'm looking for someone who is going to lead this offense", Marrone said.

The good news is that Winston did well in his preseason reps, completing 9 of 13 passes for 99 yards. Although the Jaguars recently picked up Bortles' fifth-year option, which gives them his rights through the 2018 season, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be on the team that long.

Yet, Jaguars coach Doug Marrone confirmed that is a distinct possibility, adding the 32-year-old Henne "deserves the opportunity, "according to Ryan O'Halloran for The Florida Times-Union".

The Jaguars had a chance to win the game, marching to the 2-yard line with just over a minute left in the game, but couldn't connect on two pass attempts in the end zone. He also missed an extra point in the fourth.

The Jaguars' faltered throughout the first three quarters until third-string quarterback Brandon Allen entered the game.

The Jaguars will have the day off on Friday but will return to work this weekend.

The Buccaneers played without two starters: cornerback Brent Grimes (leg laceration) and linebacker Devante Bond (sprained knee).

The Tampa Bay Bucs finished second in the NFC South with a record of 9-7 last season. Marqise Lee went down in practice with a high-ankle sprain and could miss the rest of preseason, while prized rookie Leonard Fournette is sitting out this game with a foot injury. He was bad, generating stats only in garbage time after the team had fallen way behind. That hasn't happened. And now it's at the point where Bortles might not be the team's Week 1 starter - or in their plans at all.
