Violence breaks in Kenya, as Uhuru Kenyatta emerge victor of Presidential election

BBCI: Kenya election: Uhuru Kenyatta defeats Raila Odinga

President Uhuru Kenyatta was named the victor of Kenya's general election, the country's electoral commission (IEBC) announced on Friday.

Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was formally declared the victor of the country's presidential election on Friday, vowed to unite the nation after his main rival and Opposition leader Raila Odinga rejected the vote as a fraud.

Top Odinga lieutenant Johnson Muthama said police had been packing corpses into body bags and dumping them, remarks likely to exacerbate the tensions that followed Friday night's official announcement that Kenyatta had won, with 54.3 percent of votes.

Shortly before the results were announced, opposition members said they will reject it.

President-elect of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, has called upon the National Super Alliance (NASA) leader, Raila Odinga, to come on board and help in ideas for the coining the next government. Let us be peaceful, let us reach out to one another. "It's now time for us all to get back to work and move this country forward".

Odinga, a former prime minister, claims that hackers infiltrated the election commission's computer system with the identity of a murdered election official and altered results to favour the 55-year-old Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's first president after independence from British colonial rule. As with any competition, there shall always be winners, and there shall be losers.

Police, who were deployed in anticipation of the results, have fired tear gas in several locations.

The Kenyan police killed at least 11 people in suppressing the protests in Kisumu and communities surrounding the capital city due to the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Demonstrations have largely taken place in opposition strongholds, but have generated comparisons with the disputed 2007 election which led to two months of ethno-political violence that left 1,100 people dead.

During a speech to about 4,000 supporters, Odinga said his followers should strike on Monday.

Ahead of the results, Mr. Odinga had called on his supporters to remain calm, but added that he did not control anyone, and that "people want to see justice".

This is Odinga's fourth and likely final attempt to take the presidency.
