Lexington, Ky. Mayor Says Confederate Statues Are Coming Down After Charlottesville

Charlottesville: The history of the statue behind the white supremacist rally

On Monday, Pugh told The Sun that it was her "intention to move forward with the removal of the statues" and said she was frustrated that Rawlings-Blake left the work undone, especially considering she had held on to a recommendation to remove two statues for nearly a year.

The mayor suggested the statues be moved to a community park.

The speaker of the Maryland state House on Monday called for the removal of a statue of Roger B. Taney, the Supreme Court justice who penned the Dred Scott decision in 1857, from the state house lawn.

Busch, a Democrat, made his remarks after hundreds of protesters gathered in Charlottesville over the weekend to decry a gathering of white supremacists to rally against plans to remove a Confederate statue.

The removal process was first initiated when former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake commissioned a board of academics and officials to recommend what should be done with the monuments.

"I am taking action to relocate the Confederate statues". On Sunday, the Baltimore City Councilman Brandon Scott‏ took to twitter to announce his intentions to introduce a final draft of a resolution that would remove these monuments.

The move comes after a vehicle plowed through a group of counter protesters at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. "They are there as symbols of racial hatred and that's why we feel they should come down".

Lexington, Kentucky will be the next city to shuffle the location of two of its Confederate-era monuments, the city's mayor, Jim Gray, revealed on Saturday.

For Blackmon, if America ever wants to come to terms with the role white supremacy has played in its birth, the nation needs to "acknowledge [it] at every single level of government and social life".
