Sir Mo Farah claims silver in 5000 metres at world athletics championships

Farah was less than a second back in 13:33.22, the Kenyan-born America Paul Chelimo winning bronze in 13:33.30.

In his last track race Farah quickly went to the front of the race in order to keep the pace with the unsafe Chelimo.

"I gave 110 per cent", he said in the immediate aftermath.

Claiming to have been exhausted after his 10,000m efforts and 5,000m heats, he added: "Tactically, I was trying to cover every move".

Momentarily, it looked like Farah might not even take a medal.

Quite simply, Farah will go down in history as Britain's best-ever athlete and one of the greatest the world has ever witnessed.

National champion Kemoy Campbell finished 10th out of the 16 starters in the men's 5000-metre final on the ninth and penultimate day of the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London on Saturday.

Mo Farah last night signed off on his last major competition at the World Athletics Championships in London with a silver rather than the gold he coveted.

Farah and his team-mate Andrew Butchart had tried to break up the field with 600 metres to go in a race that had been run at generally a very slow pace.

The 34-year-old had been unbeaten for six years against the best in the world. Five laps to go, Chelimo went again, then the Australian Patrick Tiernan, briefly opening a 10 metre gap, the tension rising all the time.

For Farah, there will be no comeback on the track, as he now moves up the marathon looking to extend his gold medal haul.
