Turnbull's party rejects MP vote on gay marriage

Any move to hold a postal vote on same-sex marriage is likely to be challenged in the High Court

"If that were to fail, the government believes we have a legal and constitutional way forward that gives the Australian people a say on whether or not the definition of marriage should be changed".

His comments come as same-sex marriage advocates seek new legal advice on the constitutionality of the ABS conducting the postal ballot. He revealed that the original plebiscite would go back to the Senate this week for another vote on a bill, which was originally rejected a year ago.

Sydney's Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher and his Anglican counterpart, Archbishop Glenn Davies, have criticised a proposed Bill to permit same-sex marriage in Australia as failing to protect religious freedom.

It is highly likely the plebiscite legislation will be voted down again as there are not enough numbers in the Senate in favour of it.

"This decision goes another step closer towards recognising marriage equality as an worldwide human rights issue".

Turnbull says he is following through on a campaign pledge to hold the plebiscite.

Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays national spokesperson, Shelley Argent, said: "We will lobby the Senate to continue to oppose a plebiscite and we will move to have a postal vote struck down in the high court".

But if the legislation is voted down again (as it was in November previous year, and as is likely again in any new vote), the government will push for a postal plebiscite, with mail forms to arrive in letterboxes from mid-September.

A non-binding, non-compulsory postal vote is complete BS, ' Stefanovic said, stressing that the issue should be resolved in Parliament.

The Turnball government announced yesterday that it would take its same-sex marriage plebiscite bill to the Senate this week.

Labor frontbencher Terri Butler said it was disappointing the Liberal Party continued to put up more obstacles to marriage equality.

Several gay senators made impassioned pleas against the plan at the time, saying it would lead to denigration of their families and subject them to hate speech. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull sets the deadline to decide the reform in parliament on December 7.

"Strong leaders carry out their promises".

Terri Butler, one of the opposition Labor Party's key advocates on same-sex marriage, said it was clear that a majority of the members of Parliament supported legalization and would vote yes if given the chance.

The question will be: "Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to be married?"

The government confirmed on Tuesday that the Australian Bureau of Statistics - you may remember them from such successful ventures as the #CensusFail - will be in charge of the votes.

On Monday, Turnbull reportedly cautioned cabinet colleagues over the encouragement of some backbenchers to launch a bill that would have pushed for a free vote on gay marriage.

Despite strong support for gay marriage, the country is seen by some as lagging behind nations that allow homosexual couples the right to Wednesday.
