Tropical Storm Franklin menaces Mexico's Yucatan peninsula

Tropical Storm Franklin Could Form This Week

Tropical Storm Franklin struck the east coast of Mexico late Monday - packing winds of about 60 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said.

From there it will move back out over the Bay of Campeche and will likely restrengthen before a second landfall in eastern Mexico. Wind gusts of at least 80 miles per hour are possible near coastal regions of northern Veracruz if Franklin becomes a hurricane, according to AccuWeather.

Heavy rain with rain totals of up to 12 inches, life-threatening flash flooding, and storm surges 2-4 feet above normal tide levels are expected in the watch and warning areas.

The environment around Franklin is improving and it is likely that the system will become a robust tropical storm before reaching the Yucatan peninsula.

Tropical storm warnings are in place for a larger portion of the region, encompassing the coast of Mexico from Chetumal to Sabancuy, and from Belize City in Belize northward to the Mexican border.

Tourists visiting Mexico's Riviera Maya region should expect several inches of rain, some coastal flooding and unsafe rip currents into Tuesday. The storm is expected to clear the Yucatan Peninsula by Tuesday evening, but will head toward mainland Mexico between Tampico and Veracruz, making landfall on Thursday morning.

Weakening is expected while Franklin moves across the Yucatan peninsula today.

In August 2016, Tropical Storm Earl/Hurricane Earl made landfall in Belize, crossed Guatemala and southern Mexico.

"Downpours will first reach the eastern Yucatan on Monday afternoon with the worst impacts across the peninsula on Monday night into Tuesday", he said.

According to The Weather Channel, "high pressure in the southern USA should remain strong enough that Franklin will not directly affect the US".

Researchers at Colorado State University released a revised Atlantic hurricane season forecast Friday, News Service of Florida reported, and unlike most years, they're not adjusting their prediction downward.
