Four People Charged With Leaking Classified Info, Concealing Contacts - Sessions

In a letter to Sessions, Republican Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry denied that New Mexico's largest city is a sanctuary for immigrants living in the country illegally and said he has been trying to work with immigration authorities since taking office in 2009.

"I have this message for our friends in the intelligence community: The Justice Department is open for business", Sessions said.

The Department of Justice told Albuquerque and three other cities that they needed to comply with federal immigration enforcement requirements or risk federal law enforcement funding for a new program to fight increased crime.

Sessions, in a brief speech at the Justice Department, said that he spoke to career employees and, "at their suggestion, one of the things we are doing is reviewing policies affecting media subpoenas".

Sessions was accompanied by Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and National Counterintelligence and Security Center Director William Evanina.

Coats gave a warning to anyone who possesses classified information who might be thinking about leaking that information. "We must balance their role with protecting our national security and the lives of those who serve in our intelligence community, the armed forces, and all law abiding Americans", he continued.

Sessions said the government has tripled the amount of leak investigations.

The Department of Justice said Friday it was reviewing its policies on subpoenaing reporters in investigations of information leaks, a move that could compel journalists to break confidential agreements with sources or face legal consequences.

The attorney general would not give details about specific investigations, but said four individuals had already been charged with the unlawful release of sensitive government information. "No government can be effective when its leaders cannot discuss sensitive matters in confidence or to talk freely in confidence with foreign leaders".

"I've listened to our career investigators, FBI agents...and our prosecutors about how to most successfully investigate and prosecute these matters", Sessions said.

The Post said it obtained full transcripts that were "produced by White House staff" and based on records kept by White House note-takers. In the eyes of many on the right, those actions have tainted special counselor Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling.

President Trump has been enraged by the continual leaks coming out of the White House and intelligence community, and complained on Twitter last week that his attorney general was "weak" when it came to going after leakers. He added that leakers will be "caught and prosecuted" by the DOJ, and lie detectors may be used, if necessary.

"There are many different ways to discover who is leaking".

These first months of the Trump administration dramatically illustrate that point.

"I strongly agree with the President and condemn in the strongest terms the staggering number of leaks undermining the ability of our government to protect this country", Sessions said during a Friday press conference in Washington.
