Tragic Baby Deaths in 2 Days in Phoenix

The 7-month-old boy was found in the car this afternoon unresponsive but was later pronounced dead

"Right now, the early indication is that the baby was here and family members did not know that the baby was left in the vehicle", Phoenix police said.

Police said the father did not know the child was in the back of the vehicle until he got to the church.

Two babies have have lost their lives to hot auto deaths in the Phoenix area in the past two days, according to officials.

Police said no arrests have been made, and it appears the incident was accidental.

Phoenix police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune later identified the dead child as Josiah Riggins.

One day earlier, on Friday, seven-month-old Zane Endress died after being left alone in a vehicle on the northeast side of Phoenix.

On Saturday, medical responders arrived at the Free Church of God in Christ parking lot on the southside of Phoenix, where they found an unconscious 1-year-old boy inside a auto.

The National Weather Service had the temperature in Phoenix at 99 degrees at 2:40 p.m.

'You feel like it's something that could happen to anybody, ' she said.

The baby died from heatstroke after being left in the care of his grandparents, according to local media.

Sgt. Mercedes Fortune added "make sure that anybody who enters that auto, for whatever reason, just take the time to actually look and examine the vehicle".

Fortune said investigators were still interviewing the parents to determine exactly what happened.

The deaths were the first and second cases of a child dying of heat stroke in a sweltering auto this year, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune told The Washington Post.
