Kiko on Ozamiz raid: 15 killed, no police casualties, hindi makatotohanan

MONDAY JULY 24 2017 FILE

Both mayors Espinosa and Parojinog were among the government officials accused by President Rodrigo Duterte previous year of narco-politics.

Reynaldo Parojinog, mayor of the city of Ozamiz on Mindanao island, was killed with his wife and 10 others, after reportedly resisting arrest, as police stormed the farm where he and his family lived.

Among those named in the President's list are Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr, his daughter Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog-Echavez, and his brother ex-Board Member Ricardo Parojinog Ardot of Misamis Occidental.

Meanwhile, lawyer Lawrence Carim, a member of the Parojinogs' legal team, has complained that he was barred from entering the PNP headquarters at Camp Crame to accompany the vice mayor and her bother Reynaldo Jr. who were flown in from Ozamiz early Monday morning.

Confiscated from the mayor's home were $27,000 in cash, three rifle grenades, bags of suspected illegal drug shabu and a firearm, the Mindanaoan Broadcasting Channel told CNN Philippines.

Apparently, the Parojinogs were not chummy with Jovie Espenido, who is said to have made statements meant to threaten the local political leadership after he assumed as Ozamiz chief of police in December 8, 2016.

Also yesterday, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II ordered the immigration bureau to be on the lookout for seven suspected illegal drug operators, including at least two publicly linked by Duterte to the narcotics trade.

Senate opposition leader Franklin Drilon questioned the circumstances of the attack on Parojinog's home and pointed out that the deaths of two other mayors were subsequently found to be "rub-outs".

"He's a high-value target on illegal drugs", Espenido said.

Espenido had accused Gomez of involvement in the alleged illegal drug operations of Espinosa, an allegation that Gomez has denied. "Why are search warrants, served before dawn as in the cases of Mayor Espinosa and now, Mayor Parojinog, result (ing) in the deaths of the persons being searched?"

The police officers were "met with volleys of fire from (the mayor's) security, prompting the Philippine National Police personnel to retaliate", Pacleb said.

In November Rolando Espinosa, the mayor of Albuera town, was killed inside his cell during a night-time raid in a provincial jail.

"The administration vowed to intensify the drug campaign", Ernesto Abella, presidential spokesperson said, according to AP.

The Parojinog family was among those named by President Duterte in his list of government officials involved in the drug trade a year ago.

The incident comes a year after Mr. Duterte launched a war against the drug trade.

Duterte, in several of his news conferences and public events, has waved a thick book he said contained names of officials suspected of drug links.
